Study - Mediator Ooccoo by UndyingNephalim Study - Mediator Ooccoo by UndyingNephalim
I felt it would be fun to make a study of every Zelda character once in awhile, both canon and OC that I have drawn or will come to draw in my series and maybe shed light as to why I chose their designs.

"Your timing is flawed as always. " -Mediator Ooccoo.

Full name and other titles: Mediator Ooccoo, High Emissary of Demoko

Appearances: Twilight Princess (canon), Gerudo Wars, Time's Menagerie (non-canon)

Design Notes: I was supposed to do another study, but I'm ahead in Gerudo Wars and at long last my biggest secret was revealed. In Twilight Princess, the Oocca, these demonic little freaky chicken beings with no workable appendages, supposedly constructed these massive cities in the sky, as well as the Temple of Time. It got me thinking.... how the heck did these little beings manage to construct something so impressive? I started thinking about the Dominion Rod, an item supposedly created by the Oocca as well. It's capable of animating stone. What if that technology could animate intricate bodies of stone? What if the Oocca at one time used something like the Dominion Rod to enhance their way of life, and eventually their reliance led their bodies to become all but useless through time. Then perhaps some catastrophic event left them as nothing but how they were in Twilight Princess... little harmless chickens unable to proceed through evolution and forced to live in what little glory they had constructed? It's late, and maybe I'm just crazy. I got different plans for them obviously. But yes, as far as the design goes I based most of it off of the Dominion Rod.

I liked the Mediator in Time's Menagerie. She had a diverse backstory, being rejected by her mother, Genetrix when she refused to heed her expectations to work for Neok, Wizard of Restless Night and Ooccoo's father, and choosing to work directly with Demoko.

But then she gets sucked into the space-time vortex created by the now-corrupt Demoko's second, giant mechanical head form. Whatever happened to her? Was she disintegrated by the vortex? If so, I'm not surprised anymore. You do have a rep for killing off good characters. (Mido, Demoko, Saria, and Zaleen [Okay, that last one I'm not so sure of.])

I have a request.
There's an idea for a fanfic within me bubbling up to the surface, and I can't help but ask, may I include these concepts and design for the Oocco race in it, with full credit given to you of course?

Hehe I don't, as long as all the credit stuff is taken care of as usual. ^^;

Lol the only difference between you and him... You make this look good. I don't know how many times I bashed myself for accidentally hitting the Ooccoo pots.

Y'know, I wondered that same thing, about how the heck these armless little Cuccos had built these mighty works, but didn't make the connection with the Dominion Rod. That makes total sense.

How'd you get the transparent gauzy bits of the robes? is it photomanip, or a layer thing?

I used a texture brush, warped it with the warp tool to make it curve, and i think i set the layer to 75% opacity.

Aw shoot. That is so something I would have thought of (if I had thought of it). It's great for it's grounded logic; using all we know about them to come up with a concept which uses the least amount of invention as possible...

I really wish I had thought of it...

I've always pictured the Oocca as a master society that is dormant. After the Goddesses instructed the Oocca to set their machinations forth, the completion of their tasks had rendered them spent.
Therefore, with their Hylian creations left to their own devices (IE: war and destruction), the Oocca simply drifted on, possibly the resent and shame of failure.

In my story, they reawaken with the death of Ganondorf. The evidence of greater good stirred the Oocca to rise once more and reestablish a connection with the Hylians; something Shad had been trying to do for years.
I think the Sages are connected to the Oocca, so they, in part had a hand in the forging of the Master Sword.

I ramble.

This is really good stuff. I was not expecting them in the Manga, but boy you've done a great job!

Regards,
-Justin.

Honestly, I think that SciFi + Fantasy is a great combination if you can get it to work well... This hasn't really worked that through, to be honest. >.> My theory is that the Oocca were more of a garuda-like race in the Ancient times. Great and powerful physically, and able to bring all that stone to a mountaintop. From that mountaintop, they used the Dominion Rod to separate themselves from the world and its troubles, making everything great. They then give the DR to the people of Hyrule, thinking they no longer need it. They're wrong, they realize, as their city begins to fall apart almost a full thousand years later. And thus, Oocca and her son are sent by the king - who is later transformed into the Twilight Dragon - to get it back. ^^ And that's that.

Very cool theory and bad-ass design. The boob-feathered human-headed chickens always creeped me out.

Like the design, far better than the Nintendo version. As for the City in the Sky's construction, I actually made a comment on the zelda wiki about the reason their were so many Lizalfos in it was due to they were used (or forced) to construct it... seeing as I never imagined them doing it themselves with their tiny twisted little bodies.

Hmmm, I never really gave much thought as to why the Lizalfos were there, I just automatically assumed Zant somehow dropped them there with Argorok. The Lizalfos constructing the city is another really good theory to keep in mind though...

Hmm... Intricate design... And yeah, the Dominion Rod is admittedly one of the most awesome items to ever appear in a Zelda game. The Spinner is next in line, though. XD

Well now that... is a take on it I had never fathomed. And yet it makes sense. It also explains the last GW page.

Hehe indeed. I was hoping to tap into technology without going "too" sci-fi. The whole Dominion Rod was just too good a hole to get by that.
